On August 6, through an official statement, the Miss Universe organization announced that starting next year, women who are married, divorced, with children or pregnant will be able to participate in the beauty pageant.
Said announcement was sent to the different delegations of the world and it was detailed that the requirements will be less demanding in terms of the marital or maternal status of the contestants. In addition, the age range to participate will be between 18 and 28 years.
The organization’s CEO, Amy Emmerich, pointed out that the decision was made after surveys were conducted among the organization’s directors and fans of the franchise, in which the majority agreed that the requirements were more relaxed.
Starting in 2023, women who are or were married, as well as women who are pregnant or have children, will be allowed to participate. We want to evolve to how times have changed to represent women in the best way and support them globally. Within our surveys, the response we received was overwhelming. Personal decisions should not be an obstacle for women to succeed.
For many years, these types of contests have been severely criticized, since many people consider that they stereotype women, which is why, since the announcement of the new rules of the international contest, the response worldwide has been positive.
Despite the difference in our cultures and beliefs, this allows all women to put their destiny in their own hands and, consequently, we will mold ourselves to the next Miss Universe. As a result of these latest changes, we hope to continue to welcome more aspiring women into our community.
For its part, the Mexican delegation also announced the news. Through a video broadcast on her social networks, the National Director of the Universal Mexican contest, Lupita Jones, only expressed her concern about knowing which pregnant women will be able to participate, since factors such as routines, trips, etc., could mean a risk for they. However, she considers that such details have already been analyzed by the committee.
