Michael B Jordan is currently promoting the arrival in theaters of ‘Creed 3’, a film that is doing very well at the box office and for which he acknowledges that the anime was one of his main sources of inspiration. However, the actor is clear that Hollywood has not managed to carry out any good live-action adaptation of an anime.
“we haven’t got it yet“
During an interview with Konbini in which he reviewed several films that have marked him in one way or another, and at a certain point he came to ‘Dragonball Evolution’ to find out what is your opinion on Hollywood movies based on animeto which he replies: “We have not yet achieved it, we are still waiting for one that does. It wasn’t going to be me, not yet, but I did put a little something in ‘Creed 3’ to see if I could make it work without becoming Dragonball Evolution“.
He himself admits that he is optimistic about the possibility that someone ends up achieving it and only hopes to be there to see it. Furthermore, he points what do you think is wrong with those films and what is the way forward to straighten the course:
It’s hard because anime is so fertile in so many subjects and animation allows you to do things in a way that our technology and cameras haven’t yet. From a business standpoint, people think they’re going to take this intellectual property, cast actors and do it, but they haven’t synthesized the essence of the themes, which makes anime anime. I think you need a real fan, someone who really loves anime, to get it done and to do it the way it needs to, in combination with the cinematic element and the new technologies that we have.
Only time will tell if someone gets it.but I suspect that more than one will mention ‘Speed Racer’ as the film that already managed to do this 15 years ago but its failure was such that Holywood chose not to continue down that path…
