Every year thousands of foreign workers come to Canada hoping for a better quality of life. However, the situation is far from ideal.
On May 28, during an interview for EFE, A group of Mexican migrants denounced a network of alleged recruiters who lure Mexican immigrants with false promises of stable work in Canada and then turn them into “modern slaves” by working in subhuman conditions.
Kevin, a Mexican migrant deported to Quintana Roo, Mexico, revealed to the Spanish newspaper that the reality is that they are exploited with low-paid jobs and are crammed into small houses that they share with up to 15 people.
Everything is a fraud. they charge you 600 dollars [canadienses] (approximately 441 US dollars) per month for rent and demand another five thousand dollars on the grounds that they are processing your refuge in Canada.
In addition, Kevin specified that after being considered by the false recruiters, he borrowed money from his relatives to travel to Canada in order to obtain a good job and earn dollars. However, he emphasized that “everything is a lie.”
Please, don’t be fooled, they will only take you to Canada to exploit you, to turn you into slaves in the 21st century.
The scam that Mexicans fall into is the illusion of the Canadian dream promoted through social networks under the argument that the Government of that country has a high demand for labor and programs that facilitate legal permanence. However, many of these are cases of fraud.
Before Kevin’s deportation, Canadian authorities in Mexico, who refused to identify themselves, warned to avoid falling into this type of fraud and abuse. Finally, Canadian sources reported that, in recent months, they have carried out rescues of migrants who were working in subhuman conditions.
