Meghan Markle wept as she watched Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin being carried out of Westminster Abbey after a remarkable funeral attended by tales of leaders from around the world. The Duchess of Sussex wiped her cheek during the emotional moment as she stood with Camilla, the Queen Consort, Kate, the Princess of Wales and her children Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
Before the service, the Duchess briefly stood next to Kate, George and Charlotte as she watched as Elizabeth II’s coffin was placed on the altar. She and Harry then took seats in the second row with Princess Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.
In the front row with Carlos and Camilla were the princess royal, her husband, Timothy Laurence; Prince Andrew; Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex; the Prince and Princess of Wales with George and Charlotte; Peter Phillips; and Zara and Mike Tindall.
Later, at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, Meghan and Harry were directed to their seats by the Princess of Wales as she, William, Kate and Charlotte stepped aside to guide them to their booth.
The Sussexes live in California but have been in the UK since the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8. They were in the country for the WellChild Awards when the news was announced.
The couple were not with their children Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 15 months, who are believed to have remained in California with Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland.
Before the service, the Duke of Sussex put aside his feud with his brother, Prince William, to walk alongside him behind the queen’s coffin. Harry was wearing a civilian suit instead of a uniform due to the fact that he is no longer a member of royalty.
The UK’s biggest church, packed with 2,000 personalities including prime ministers, presidents and the royal family, was serene apart from the sound of hymns and prayers at a funeral service Her Majesty prepared before she died.
The Queen made her final journey from Westminster Hall to the church where she was married and crowned as Britain mourned its longest-serving monarch and the royals said goodbye to a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
His coffin was placed near the altar with his crown, orb and scepter, on top of which was an arrangement of flowers chosen by King Carlos III, which were cut from the gardens he loved.
