The last weekend of May 2022 is about to arrive and at Espinof we could not miss our usual review of the most outstanding cinema of these days. A little further down you will find the 14 must-see movies that I have chosen for this weekend, and perhaps there will be luck and some will be of interest to you.
Before we focus on today’s picks, I’d like to remind you that we also have a list of 4 must-see movies leaving Netflix at the end of the month. And if you want to have more variety, here is our selection of great science fiction movies that failed unfairly and you can watch them in streaming or this other amazing horror movie on platforms.
In theaters
‘Top Gun: Maverick’
We have had to wait for more than 35 years to see how the adventures of the character played by Tom Cruise, but what if it was worth it, because it is a much better and more entertaining film than its predecessor. A first class show that needs to be seen on the big screen to enjoy it as it deserves.

‘Jujutsu Kaisen 0’ (‘Gekijouban Jujutsu Kaisen 0’)
A film that works as a prequel to the current anime. It arrives a little late in our country, but no one doubts that its fans are looking forward to seeing it on the big screen to fill in certain gaps about their favorite characters.

‘Venicephrenia’
Álex de la Iglesia kicked off the The Fear Collection with a horror film with a certain improvised spirit, generous in violent scenes and the use of blood, but also somewhat irregular and that ends in a totally unexpected way. You will find it on Amazon Prime Video.

Original pentalogy of ‘Planet of the Apes’ (‘Planet of the Apes’)
Everyone by now should have seen ‘Planet of the Apes’, an undisputed classic of science fiction cinema, but if this is not the case, it is finally available for streaming. And also its sequels, in which crazy concepts were handled that will surely surprise more than one today. You have the complete saga of five films now available on Disney +.

in physical format
‘Top Secret!’
This week there is no noteworthy novelty in physical format, so I’m recovering a release that I missed for a reason last week, since it hasn’t been until now that this mythical comedy starring Val Kilmer It has been released on blu-ray in Spain. And with extras! That Paramount often seems to forget to include them in our country…
in TV
‘Return to the past’ (‘Out of the Past’)
An indispensable classic of film noir and perhaps the best film of Jacques Tourneur, which are big words considering certain titles of his filmography. Everything in it works practically flawlessly, from the cast to the drawing of the characters, going through the staging work -eye also to its photography- or the script. If you can only see one of this week’s selection, let it be ‘Back to the past’.

‘Self defense’ (‘The Rainmaker’)
Francis Ford Coppola demonstrated here that he had the ability to make a film following Hollywood preferences and to produce a highly respectable adaptation of a novel by John Grisham, very popular at the time. It may not be memorable, but never say no to commercial cinema done right.

‘The hunt for Red October’ (‘The Hunt for Red October’)
A model submarine film in which alec baldwin He proved to be at the height of a character of the importance of Jack Ryan, no matter how much he was later dispensed with. Also, Sean Connery embroiders it as the main counterpoint to the protagonist and John McTiernan shows once again his great talent behind the cameras.

The Hunt for Red October review
‘Pacific Rim’
William of the Bull He gave us a movie about giant monsters to give joy to our inner child, because I am very clear that I would have liked it even more if I had seen it as a kid. Visually impressive, it’s a luxurious pastime that tries to go a little beyond the most usual clichés of this type of proposal, but it’s fair to point out that the script is not one of its strong points.

‘tenet’
The latest feature film to date directed by Christopher Nolan is an ambitious science fiction film that I personally did not fall in love with, which does not mean that it will be your case. In addition, it is increasingly rare that a blockbuster with its own voice is released…
