Open the ancient book of spells that has served Doctor Strange and all the Sorcerers Supreme on Earth! Discover The Book of the Vishanti.
When it comes to magic, balance is key. For every light spell used to help the Multiverse, there is a dark force that counteracts its destruction. That principle is not only reflected in the magic wielders of the Marvel Universe, but also in its two main books of knowledge: The Darkhold and the Book of the Vishanti.
Do not miss: This is how chaos would be controlled in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Where the pages of the Darkhold offer its readers infinite wisdom on black magic, death, and chaos, the Book of Vishanti represents just the opposite. In this volume that says it all are the secrets of life, restoration, healing and protection.
But what exactly is the Book of the Vishanti? How did it come to be? Well, first of all, the text exists as the number one source of light magic spells and has often been possessed by the Sorcerer Supreme. Doctor Stephen Strange refers to this book to keep his home realm (and other untold dimensions) safe from all kinds of mystical threats. So, let’s go through the pages of the book highlighting some of the most interesting passages in it!
Chapter 1: Who are the Vishanti?
In the “earlier times,” unimaginably powerful beings known as Agamotto, Oshtur, and Hoggoth worked to defend the nascent Earth against magical chaos. Known collectively as the Vishanti, this trio wanted to keep track of their positive spells and began collecting them into a single book, the Book of the Vishanti. Much like what Elder God Chthon did when building his Darkhold grimoire!
The Book of Light is a living document that breathes in more than a few ways, specifically because wizards who have possessed it can amplify it. The first Master of the Mystic Arts to wield the book after Vishanti was Varnae, who would become one of the first vampires. Others like the Ancient One, Doctor Strange, Doctor Voodoo, and even Loki have since used it.
Kaluu: The Book Thief
When Kaluu, the friend of Kamar-Taj’s fallen Elder-turned-despot, returned from a self-imposed exile in the Raggadorr dimension, he sought revenge and immediately went after the book in Strange Tales #147-150.
The Ancent One warned his disciple Doctor Strange that this enemy could defeat them both. And Kaluu lived up to his infamous reputation by stealing the Book of the Vishanti from right under both of them!
After examining it, Kaluu sent the book back to the time and place the Ancient One took it from all those years ago. Nearly defeated by Kaluu, Strange and his teacher traveled back in time to retrieve the mystical text. But first, the Ancient One had to face the holy griffin. After banishing the creature to a realm outside of time, the two wizards used the book and their own powers to transport Kaluu to Limbo!
The spell of fire and ice
The Book of the Vishanti was stolen again by Asmodeus, leader of the Sons of Satannish in Doctor Strange (1968) #177-178. The degenerate demon intended to bring chaos to Earth by unleashing Ymir the Frost Giant and Surtur from the ferocious Muspelheim by means of the Fire and Ice Spell. However, Strange placed a protective spell on the book that transported it directly to the Ancient One in case of tampering.
Asmodeus (revealed to be Dr. Charles Benton, one of Strange’s medical colleagues) managed to get his hands on the book once more and say the words “Thermidorus… Frigibus… Nihilius” before dying. With that, he brought the great fighters to Earth who instantly began to wreak havoc. Strange had to recruit the Avengers to help keep the world safe while he devised a plan to send Surtur and Ymir back to their respective dimensional prisons.
Monster Handbook
More than just a repository of spells, the Book of the Vishanti also acts as an antidote and reference guide for any master of the mystic arts. In the early years of the Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme (1988) series, readers learned more and more about the book’s arcane lore. The tome chronicles the story of the villainous Baron Mordo, as well as the many evil secrets held within the Darkhold, including the Montesi Formula for eradicating vampires.
Other sections have chronicled the mystical nature of voodoo and werewolves. Another chapter delves into the Fear Lords, seven powerful beings interested solely in sowing fear and anxiety among mortals, including D’Spayre, Straw Man, Dweller-in-Darkness, The Lurking Unknown, the fear-eater Kkallakku, and Nox. And those are just the passages we’ve seen; many more fill the legendary volume.
a good lie
For a time, magic in the Marvel Universe was in danger of being erased by a being called the Imperator who was thwarted by Doctor Strange. However, the villain managed to greatly reduce the amount of witchcraft in the world. Already feeling depressed after the magic was nearly wiped out on his turn, Strange was shocked to discover that the Vishanti had deemed Loki, God of Mischief, worthy of becoming the next Sorcerer Supreme. Despite his disbelief, Strange forked the artifacts from him, including the Book of the Vishanti.
But all this turned out to be a ruse orchestrated by the trickster god. Loki used his own magic to make Doctor Strange believe that he had been expelled, but in reality the god of lies had a master plan. He used a spell called Singhsoon’s Exile to absorb all remaining magic in the world in an attempt to restore it to the previous levels of it. Although no one fully believed him, Loki claimed that he did this so that Midgard could properly defend against upcoming threats such as War of the Realms, Hell on Earth in Las Vegas, the uniting of the Infinity Stones, and the Final Host of the Heavenly. , all of which happened !
