All good things come to an end, and sometimes it’s not a bad idea to hit the brakes when you’re at your best. It’s been ten years since Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves got together to bring to life a bloodthirsty and infallible assassin in ‘John Wick’, and since then there have been three installments (with the fourth next week) in which everything has happened. What no one expected is that this was the end… for now.
See you later, Baba Yaga
It was Stahelski himself, speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, who said that it would be fine for him. It is no less true that it has eleven series and movies for the next few years. (‘Ghost of Tsushima’, ‘Black samurai’ or ‘Rainbow six’ among others) and so far he has only been able to take charge of the different John Wicks. “Keanu and I are done for now. Let’s lay John Wick to rest. I’m sure the studio has a plan. If everyone loves her and goes crazy, we’ll reflect on it.”
John Wick movies always, for some strange reason, open late in Japan. It’s always like three months later. If it’s the same this time, we’ll go on a Japanese tour and release the movie in September. Keanu and I will go to Tokyo, sit in the Imperial Hotel Scotch Bar and say, ‘What do you think?’ We’ll have a couple of twenty-year-old whiskeys and write some ideas on napkins. If those ideas stick with us, maybe we’ll make a movie.
This does not mean the end of the franchise, of course. In fact, the study has confirmed for the moment two spin-offs of the saga: ‘Ballerina’, with Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves, will mark the first part of the saga in which Stahelski is not behind the camera, but Len Wiseman (director of ‘The Jungle 4.0’). For its part, the ‘El Continental’ series for Prime Video will be a three-episode prequel that will feature Mel Gibson but not Reeves, for the first time. Is there life after ‘John Wick’ or will it be the end of a franchise that cannot thrive without its lead actor? We will see it very soon.
