After its recent premiere, the Netflix miniseries Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story not only managed to occupy the first place in the list of the 10 most popular series on the platform of streaming on its first day, but only a week after its launch it has generated the odd controversy.
As if the controversy that arose after the relative of one of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims lashed out at Netflix for reliving the horrific way their loved one was taken from them wasn’t enough, a new debate has just been released, controversy in which the singers Kesha and Katy Perry were involved. But if you have no idea of the relationship that these artists may have with the serial killer, then we tell you.
It turns out that after Netflix described and recreated in detail the way in which the character played by Evan Peters killed, dismembered and also ate some of the body parts of his 17 male victims between the decades of the 70s and 90s of the 20th century, the Network fans harshly criticized Katy Perry and Kesha for romanticizing the acts of this serial killer and naming him in their songs.
The rejection of American singers and songwriters arose after the public learned of the atrocities and horrible ways in which Dhamer killed his victims. That is why it was impossible for them not to relate the verses of the songs in which both refer to the deplorable acts of the murderer known as the “Milwaukee Butcher”.
Kesha mentioned the criminal in her topic cannibalpremiered in 2010, a song in which the interpreter of Blah, Blah, Blah it not only describes the serial killer eating his victims, but also utters their name. This is the stanza in which he mentions it:
Your little heart is making noise, I want your liver on a platter. Be too sweet and you’ll be dead, yeah I’ll do a Jeffrey Dahmer. I eat the boys, breakfast and lunch, then when I’m thirsty, I drink his blood. Carnivore, animal, I am a cannibal. I eat the boys, you better run.
For her part, Katy Perry did her thing by referring to the killer in the lyrics of darkhorsea theme in which he collaborated with the rapper Juicy J, where both are criticized for the verse in which they say:
I call it Karma (come back). She eats your heart out like Jeffrey Dahmer (wow!). Be careful. She tries not to cheat on her. Shawty’s heart was on steroids. Because her love was so strong.
Both themes and singers have been the target of strong criticism, because now with the recent launch of the Netflix production, the public finally understands the reference to the name of the serial killer. Therefore, for the simple fact of mentioning his name in the topics, users have cataloged his successes as disrespectful.
However, not everything has been critical, since there are some netizens who have come out in defense of the singers and assure that Kesha and Perry’s themes are not the only ones that allude to the serial killer, since there are at least 60 themes in the that mention the name of Jeffrey Dahmer. Popular artists who reference the killer in their songs include Eminem, Nicki Minaj, and Phoebe Bridgers.
