The actress Judi Dench, one of the most respected and beloved actresses in British cinema and theater, has lashed out at those responsible for ‘The Crown’, a series created by Peter Morgan, for having supposedly renounced historical rigor to enter completely into the realm of fiction: a movement, in his opinion, very dangerous considering that the production had always been very careful in its particular recreation of the intimate life of the Windsors.
The fireproof interpreter, 87 years old, has signed a letter for The Times newspaper in which she criticizes producers and screenwriters -leaving aside the leading actors of the fifth season, among which Imelda Staunton, Dominic West and Jonathan Pryce stand out. – for having taken his artistic freedom to offensive levels and hurtful to the British royal family. Dench has made direct reference to one of the topics that the series will address in the next chapters: the conspiracy theory that, in the 1990s, claimed that the then Prince Charles had orchestrated a plot to force the abdication of Elizabeth II .
“They seem increasingly willing to blur the lines between historical accuracy and crude sensationalism. A significant number of viewers, especially outside the Islands, could take this version of the story as totally true”, the renowned artist warned in her argument, consequently requesting that Netflix inform before each episode, explicitly and notoriously, that the issues discussed are nothing more than a mere fictional story.
Judi Dench has also recalled thate time frame that will cover the fifth season of ‘The Crown’ contains very painful and still recent events for the current royals, such as the tragic death of Princess Diana in a traffic accident that occurred 25 years ago in downtown Paris. Likewise, for the interpreter it would be “cruelly unfair” that, only a month and a half after suffering the death of his mother and assuming the head of state, Carlos III had to deal with a new image crisis unleashed artificially.
“Given some of the painful innuendos that the new season apparently contains, such as the one that King Charles conspired against his mother to make him abdicate, for example, or that he once suggested that his mother’s upbringing was so poor that she should have been jailed, all of which are cruelly unfair to the people and to the institution they represent,” said Dench, Dame of the British Empire since 1988.
