Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 became the beginning of a saga that has fallen in love with millions of fans around the world, who approached this group that Stan Lee gave us in the 1960s.
However, as James Gunn himself admits, the cycle of the team he presented in 2014 will come to an end. And with the outcome of the Guardians saga, Rocket’s story will come to an end.
In an interview with Deadline, James Gunn, director of the Guardians trilogy, pointed out that one of the reasons he returned to Marvel Studios is to deliver a denouement to the irreverent raccoon plot that won the hearts of thousands of fans in the world.
“The reason I needed to finish this is because I love Rocket’s character more than any character I’ve ever dealt with before, and I needed to finish his story and that’s what Volume 3 is about.“.
Gunn, who filmed the holiday special alongside Volume 3, noted that the holiday show was made for fun, before the Guardians face the toughest challenge they can throw at them.
“I feel very comfortable. I feel very good. We did this… I think this is a bit of silly fun that the Guardians needed as an appetizer for Volume 3, which is a huge movie. I had a plan from the start“.
The end of Rocket and the original team
Since the end of Avengers: Endgame, the team has undergone a series of changes, with the addition of Kraglin and Nebula, added to Thor’s brief stay with the team, following the possible imprint of Gamora.
James Gunn pointed out that no matter what Marvel Studios decides to do with Guardians of the Galaxy, the stage that the filmmaker started in 2014 will come to an end in 2023.
“It will never be the same cast of characters for many different reasons… Who knows what will happen to the Guardians franchise in regards to future characters, but in terms of this cast of characters, this is the end of their story.“.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will feature a cast consisting of Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldaña as Gamora, David Bautista as Drax, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket Raccoon, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Pom Klementieff as the voice of Mantis and Karen Gillan as Nebula.
This production is joined by Will Poulter in the role of Adam Warlock and Chukwudi Iwuji as High Evolutionary, the villain of the plot.
Directed by James Gunn, the Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas special will arrive in December on the Disney+ platform, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
