As it has been a tradition for not years, but decades, if a cinematographic course has a feature film of steven spielberg among its premieres, this automatically becomes one of the most anticipated. This 2022 it was the turn of ‘The Fabelmans’, the semi-autobiographical film with which King Midas of Hollywood has just triumphed at the recently closed Toronto Film Festival.
Like crazy for the Oscar
The Canadian competition has awarded the film starring Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Gabriel LaBelle and Seth Rogen —among others— with the People’s Choice Award. An award that has been voted on by members of the public since 1978 and that is often seen as a fantastic omen for the Oscar raceas titles such as ‘Nomadland’, ‘Green Book’, ’12 Years a Slave’, ‘American Beauty’ or ‘Chariots of Fire’ have well shown.
Spielberg has grateful thus the award:
“Above all, I am delighted to have brought this film to Toronto. This is the most personal film I have ever made, and the warm welcome from everyone in Toronto has made my first visit to TIFF very intimate and personal for me.” and to my entire Fabelman family. Thank you Cameron Bailey and the incredible team at TIFF; thank you Universal Pictures and a very special thank you to all the Toronto film fans who have made this past weekend one I will never forget.” .
But beware, because having received the People’s Choice at TIFF —in addition to an enormous number of praises from many of those who have already been able to enjoy it— does not make his career for the precious golden statuette a piece of cake; and it is that in this 2022 the competition promises to be fiercewith a good handful of premieres that promise to wage war in the fight for nominations and awards.
Among them are productions held with a plus of festival prestige like ‘The Whale’ by Darren Aronofsky, ‘Empire of Light’ by Sam Mendes or ‘Bardo’ by Alejandro G. Iñárritu; popcorn titles that could ring the bell in nominations like ‘Daggers in the back: The mystery of Glass Onion’, ‘The Woman King’, ‘Avatar: The sense of water’ or ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ or blockbusters like ‘Top Gun: Maverick’; without forgetting the long-awaited ‘Babylon’ by Damien Chazelle.
There is no doubt that a awards season 2022-2023 really exciting.
