The actor, who plays the title’s Doctor Frasier Crane, spoke about the upcoming revival in an interview with People, explaining why. the entire cast of the legacy would not participate.
A new life, with new friends
speaking sabout the absence of David Hyde Pierce, who played Frasier’s younger brother, Dr. Niles Crane, Grammer commented:
“We’ve been working on it, honestly, for about six or seven years. It’s been on the simmer. We thought, this is not a bad idea. Maybe it’s a good idea! For a while we were going to try to bring back the whole cast, the whole cast of legacy. David basically decided that he wasn’t really interested in repeating Niles’ performance.
Grammer said that Pierce’s absence took the series in a new direction, calling it a “third Frasier act”.
“In a really fun way, it just took us to a new place, which was what we originally wanted to do anyway, a Frasier third act. It’s a whole new life for him. We’ll certainly respond to the fact that he has a brother and such, the new world for Frasier is one of new friendships, and some new twists and turns that he didn’t know were still there.”
The series, still untitled will follow Frasier to a different city, neither Boston nor Seattle and will pay tribute to actor John Mahoney.
“It’s our brave little soldier going on in life, finding new challenges, new love, new people, a new city and things like that. I’m really, really excited about it, and certainly we’ll always honor his past. We have to honor the fact that John Mahoney died and is no longer with us. We’ll take care of that for sure. We start rehearsals in February.”
