It’s been a long time since Netflix drags a bad reputation for canceling many series. There are even those who take it as a joke, but the truth is that it is a trend that does not stop going further. The last proof of this we have that only so far in January it has already canceled 5 seriesand the list promises to be endless by the end of 2023.
The series that Netflix has dispensed with during these days of January are ‘1899’, which for many was the point of no return in terms of trust in the platform, ‘Ultrasecretos’, which joined the sad list of series that Netflix cancels after announcing its renewal, ‘The Director’, ‘Dead End: Paranormal Park’ Y ‘Unpaired’.
Also, there are many titles that we haven’t heard from for so long that it is most likely that Netflix has chosen to let those series die without making too much noise. There we find works like ‘Black Summer’, ‘Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities’, ‘Ratched’, ‘Barbarians’, ‘Master of None’, ‘The Politician’ or ‘Russian Doll’, to mention just a few of the best-known films, the latest installment of which was released several months ago. Of course, the list is much longer.
Let’s remember that It is not the first time that Netflix stretches the announcement of a cancellation to the maximum, being very painful for many was the case of ‘Dark Crystal: The Age of Resistance’. Released in August 2019, the announcement that it would not have a second season was delayed until September… 2020.
Possible scenarios but with a bad future for many
However, this lack of news does not necessarily mean that it has been cancelled. For example, the fifth season of ‘Cobra Kai’ arrived in September of last year and in principle everyone continues to assume that there will be a sixth, although Netflix has not yet guaranteed us anything. Yes indeed, its creators have been busy with another series for the platformpossibly being there the explanation for the lack of news.
In other cases, Netflix opts for a less controversial solution: renewing the series for one more season, clarifying that it will be the last of the series. That is what also happened in January with ‘mo’ and a few months ago he followed the same route with ‘The Umbrella Academy’.
However, the most common thing today is that it does not get more complicated and dispenses with the series without further ado. One of the theories to explain it refers to the completion rate, that is, how many people who start watching a season finish it. The higher, the more likely to renew. The problem is that you also have to take into account how many viewers watch it and more and more people are reluctant to give their series a chance.
To all this we must add the series that are released, do not work and are canceled immediately -surely the fiasco that was ‘Blockbuster’ is still on Netflix-, but also those that return with new seasons, are not up to expectations and receive the hack without contemplation. There will be times when it even seems that they are doomed in advance, as happened recently with ‘The Warrior Nun’.
What is clear is that Netflix cancellations at the end of the year will number in the dozens -last year he reached twenty, counting only the television productions spoken in English-. If it is that only sixty come out if he maintains the rate of five a month. And January is not over yet.
