The year has been marked, among other things, by the controversies generated by the new Animal Welfare Law, without even having to enter into force. From the amendment to remove hunting dogs, rehalas and hunting assistants from the protection of said law to the expansion of the list of pets whose possession would be prohibited in Spanish homes. In this context of change in the national sensitivity regarding animals, the City Council of Oviedo receives criticism at the gates of Christmas for authorizing the use of animals in the Christmas Eve parade.
As happened last year, the Santa Claus parade (held in Oviedo on December 24) will have the participation of reindeer. Already then the criticisms were felt that have not made the organizers of the 2022 event back down. However, the parade has not yet taken place and PACMA has asked the council to withdraw the permits.
The Animalist Party that fights for animal rights, the defense of the environment and social justice has argued that this type of celebration causes large doses of “stress Y suffering“in animals.
Do you remember last year’s Christmas Eve parade in Oviedo, in which reindeer were used, with the stress that this implies for them? The @aytoviedo Y @canteli_alfredo They have authorized it again. We have sent a letter requesting that they rectify: https://t.co/YbsRLxTJeX

More specifically, for “more than 3 hours, the reindeer will be forced to walk submissively and obediently through the paved streets of Oviedo in some improper conditions from his naturetied together and at a marked pace”, as stated by Angélica Fernández, coordinator of PACMA in Oviedo.
The party has also indicated that the parade “passes through streets full of people, between shouts, noise and hubbub. So these animals, without a doubt, will end up exhausted and exhausted.” That is why he urges said administration to reconsider its decision to authorize the use of reindeer or any other animal in the parade scheduled for December 24.
