Ben Affleck was one of the key players in the DC universe devised by zack snyder. Batman’s version of him was widely applauded and we will soon see him giving life to Gotham’s vigilante for the last time in the highly anticipated ‘The Flash’. Of course, everything indicates that his relationship with DC will end there, since he has made it clear in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he does not want to have anything to do with the relaunch of this universe of superheroes in charge of James Gunn:
“I have nothing against James Gunn”
I wouldn’t direct something for James Gunn’s DC. Of course not. I have nothing against James Gunn. He’s a nice guy, I’m sure he’s going to do a great job. I just wouldn’t want to come in and run the way they’re doing. I’m not interested in that.
Also, Affleck too has fondly recalled his previous collaborations with Snyderstating that “I like a lot of the things we did, especially in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and comments on how the also director of ‘Dawn of the Dead’ managed to turn the disaster that had been ‘Justice League’ into a success:
The genius, and the silver lining, is that Zack Snyder finally went to AT&T and said, “Look, I can get you four hours of content.” And it’s mostly all the slow motion that he shot in black and white. And a day of shooting with me and him. He said to me, “Do you want to come film in my backyard?” I told him, “I think there are unions, Zack. I think we have to make a deal.” But I went and did it. And now ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ is my highest rated movie on IMDb.
Of course, Affleck does not forget the absolute disaster that was the filming of ‘Justice League’ and how that was what it ended up leading to alcoholism and to make a drastic decision for the future of both his career and his life:
It was the worst experience I’ve ever had in a business that is full of shitty experiences. He broke my heart. There was an idea that someone [Joss Whedon] came, like, “I’ll rescue you and we’ll do 60 days of shooting and I’ll write a whole thing around what you’ve got. I’ve got the secret.” And it was not the secret. That was hard. And I started drinking too much. He was back at the hotel in London, it was either that or jump out the window. And I thought, “This is not the life I want. My kids aren’t here. I’m miserable.” You want to go to work and find something interesting to hold on to, instead of just wearing a rubber suit, and most of Most of the time you’re standing in front of your computer screen saying, “If this nuclear waste gets loose, we’re going to…” That’s good. It’s not that I despise it, but I got to a point where I wasn’t creatively satisfied. Also alone, you’re sweaty and exhausted. And I thought, “I don’t want to be involved in this in any way. And I don’t want to waste any more of my life, of which I have a limited amount.”
Finally, Affleck highlighted that it was in ‘The Flash’ when He has finished getting the point of the Batman characternoting that “I finally figured out how to play that character, and I nailed it on The Flash. For the five minutes I’m there, he’s really cool.“The bad thing is that we can barely see him on the screen in that movie…
