The multinational Unilevera company dedicated to beauty and personal hygiene products, has announced the withdrawal from the market of a large selection of aerosol shampoos, because it contains benzenean ingredient that is known to be carcinogenic.
Some of the brands affected are TIGI, Tresemmé, Dove, Nexxus or Suave. The products we are talking about have been marketed in the US and Canada, and they have not been purchased directly in Spain, but through online sales or even on a trip to these countries.
benzene is a chemical considered carcinogenic by major health and consumer regulatory agencies. The cancers that have been detected the most by direct exposure to benzene is cancer of the bone marrow and leukemia. On the other hand, this substance can also affect the immune system and cause blood disorders according to the FDA (Food and Drugs Administration), the main US regulatory agency. And in the case of people overexposed to benzene, such as workers, consequences such as nausea, dizziness, or pain head and even at the highest levels can alter heart rhythm or lead to death.
Regarding the use of benzene, in North America the authorized levels are higher than those set by Europe. Therefore, the recalled products would be within the limits of the regulation. Still, Unilevr US has chosen to withdraw these products out of an abundance of caution.
