It should not surprise anyone, or I hope so, if I say that Horror is the most neglected genre in Oscar history. To recent slippages such as the contempt for Toni Collette’s enormous performance in ‘Hereditary’ and titles like ‘The Witch’ or ‘The Lighthouse’ —to give a couple of examples—, we can hide behind tapes like ‘Psycho’, ‘The Shining ‘ or ‘The thing’ to argue what is far from being a simple outburst.
Allergy to terror
The list of nominations This 2023 has not been any exception to a rule that has historically been broken with very few cases like those of ‘The sixth sense’ or ‘The exorcist’. The most important event of the year has completely ignored productions such as ‘Nope’ —what less than a candidacy for best cinematography—, ‘The menu’ —which is not terror in the strict sense— and, above all, the fantastic ‘Pearl’ by Ti West.
The sequel to ‘X’, in addition to being extremely interesting in terms of character study and in regards to the work of its director, shines thanks to the performance of an immense Mia Goth that has not had a place in the awards season —although it did win an award at the Sitges Festival. The actress, during an interview on the occasion of the premiere of ‘Infinity Pool’, the latest from Brandon Cronenberg, spoke of Hollywood Academy’s allergy to terror in the following way.
I spoke with Mia Goth about not getting a (very deserved) Best Actress Oscar nomination for PEARL — and why the Academy doesn’t take the horror genre seriously enough. pic.twitter.com/9EKPN2fB2N

“I think it’s very political and not entirely based on the quality of a project per se. I think there’s too much behind the nomination and category process and too many people involved in it. Maybe I shouldn’t say it, but I think It’s true. I think a lot of people know that. I don’t know why.”
“I think a change is necessary. It should happen. If they wanted to connect with the general public, I think it would be really beneficial.”
I can’t more than give all the reason to a Mia Goth that will close this year the trilogy started with ‘X’ in a final installment that will hit our theaters under the title of ‘MaXXXine’.
