Warner launched a sequel to ‘I am Legend’ some time ago. The unfortunate incident of Will Smith with Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars sowed doubts about the future of the project, but the screenwriter Akiva Goldsman He has just made it clear that everything is still standing and has also confirmed that ‘I am Legend 2’ is going to correct the biggest mistake of the first installment.
First details about ‘I am Legend 2’
Goldsman was already one of the writers of ‘I am Legend’ and now he has signed a new agreement with Warner to continue working with the studio and this sequel sequel is one of the priority projects. Furthermore, he has already given us the first clues about history:
It will start a few decades later than the first. I’m obsessed with ‘The Last of Us’, where we see the world right after the apocalypse, but also after a lapse of 20-30 years. You see the land reclaiming the world, and there is something beautiful in the question of what happens when man is no longer the main tenant. That will be especially visual in New York. I don’t know if they will go up to the Empire State Building, but the possibilities are endless.
Even more surprising is that the sequel is going to ignore the ending of the first installment and instead refer to the alternate ending, something unprecedented in Hollywood. Let’s remember that Will Smith’s character died in the original ending, but in the version that appeared in domestic format he managed to survive and completely changed the message of the film. That will be one of the bases of the film, as Goldsman also promises greater fidelity to the original novel by Richard Matheson.
We flash back to Matheson’s original book, and the alternate ending as opposed to the ending seen in the original movie. What Matheson was talking about was that man’s time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end. It is something very interesting that we are going to explore. There will be a little more fidelity to the original text.
For now It is unknown when ‘I am Legend 2’ will hit theaters.
