The I Am Groot animated shorts have generated a new debate about whether this series is part of the MCU canon, or its episodes are from a separate universe.
A new proposal from Marvel Studios arrives with I am Groot, the series of animated shorts that follow the antics of Groot in his most tender stage. Despite its hilarious nonsense, one lingering question is whether I am Groot is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon.

Since phase four of the MCU, the House of Ideas explores other ways of telling stories and for this reason, in addition to the movies, Marvel Studios entered the production of live-action series and animated series such as What If…? and I am Groot.
For phase five, animated series such as Spider-Man: Freshman Year and X-Men ’97 are contemplated, but these programs will not be part of the MCU canon. Will the same thing happen with I Am Groot?
The discussion opens
For James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy and executive producer of I am Groot, this series brings fun elements, but does not consider it part of the MCU canon, as he pointed out on his social networks.
“Some people at Marvel seem to think it’s canonically MCU. I find it hard to see myself”.
While Brad Winderbaum, executive producer of the series, and people close to the upper echelons of Marvel Studios, pointed out that the I am Groot episodes are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“It actually takes place between the end of Guardians 2 and before the tag scene in Guardians 2”
In this sense, the director of the episodes agrees, Kirsten Lepore, who emphasizes that the first episode, Groot’s first steps, is located between volumes 1 and 2 of Guardians of the Galaxy.
“That opening sequence when he’s dancing and everyone’s fighting and everything, amazing, very inspiring for the series.”
