I have to admit that I had many doubts about what we were going to find with ‘Rabbit Hole‘, the thriller starring Kiefer Sutherland that premieres this Friday on SkyShowtime. Especially after some disappointment with Shawn Ryan’s ‘The Night Agent’ (although I’m afraid I’m a little alone in it). Thank God my fears were allayed after watching a couple of scenes.
And the series goes directly to the point. With a clear and simple presentation in which we see the “work” of John Weir (Sutherland) as a sort of trickster/Robin Hood of financial assets. Right after celebrating a big coup of his, everything goes wrong: deaths, explosions and he is framed as the main suspect.
In body and soul, what they present John Requa and Glenn Ficarra as co-creators of the series it is a textbook spy/conspiracy thriller. What happens to Weir It’s nothing new in the genre. (Ethan Hunt may be the first thing that comes to mind) in which the protagonist instead of hiding decides to walk around to see what is happening and how to clear his name.
Prepare the popcorn
Part of me wanted us to linger a little longer in how the company of Weir and his team worked, which was practically reminiscent of ‘Leverage’ (The rules of the game in Spain). However, I think that the plot begins at the right time, so it was not necessary to go too far in details and missions that are irrelevant.
Above all because, as the first two episodes of ‘Rabbit Hole’ unfold, there is plenty of time for, between twists and turns, offer a certain amount of flashbacks that take us to the protagonist’s childhood and better understand the protagonist’s motives and personality, with his traumas, his anxiety attacks and a certain paranoia.
Although it is inevitable to think of Jack Bauer from ’24’, Sutherland’s Weir is a character that relies on charm and intelligence. Almost more like his role in ‘Designated Successor’. A highly intelligent person with a great understanding of people’s psychological and behavioral codes, which allows him to be the scammer that we will end up supporting and encouraging.
A cast that plays in favor

A rather charismatic and entertaining character to watch… and whom joins Meta Golding as Hailey, who displays great chemistry and self-confidence. In general, the main cast is very comfortable in their respective roles despite the fact that sometimes the script uses them as mere utilities to advance plots and unfold twists. Especially the minor characters.
Speaking of twists and cliffhangers, these are not in short supply throughout the two episodes released. It must be recognized, in this sense, that sometimes one can come to miss a little more seriousness or, at least, a little more dramatic intensity in the course of the story or, directly, a somewhat more developed and profound script. . But it doesn’t bother.
It may not stand out in the lists of the best series of the year, but certainly ‘Rabbit Hole’ It is one of those series to watch almost with popcorn. A light-hearted, mostly self-aware thriller that doesn’t take itself too seriously either. It complies, entertains and hits… sometimes you don’t need more.
