Long time that Hollywood is not exactly a place where ideas flow non-stop: when they are not sequels they are adaptations or remakes. But the case of the project that Universal is already preparing cries out to heaven: following in the wake of Disney’s live-action remakes, from ‘Beauty and the Beast’ to ‘The Little Mermaid’, in 2025 we will be able to enjoy… ‘How to train your dragon’. Yes really.
Toothless is back
One would think that after the animated trilogy that ended in 2019 and that has given rise to five shorts and three television series, the franchise is already squeezed too much, but one can never turn one’s back on the wheel that never stops turning. At least you’re in good hands: its director, screenwriter and producer will be Dean DeBloisthe same man in charge of the ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ films and who was about to direct the live action adaptation of his own ‘Lilo and Stitch’.
It is inevitable to wonder if the March 14, 2025the release date of this reboot, is a date far enough from 2010 for the saga to seem totally groundbreaking to a new generation, especially with the well-known question: Was it really necessary? What can you contribute that Dreamworks Animation did not already contribute fifteen years ago?
If it really is more of a reboot than a remake, they have cloth to cut: after all, Cressida Cowell’s original novels are almost nothing like the supposed adaptations, so if they want to try to make a more faithful adaptation, there may be room for surprise. On the other hand, this is Hollywood: Do we really believe that surprising the audience is, today, a priority?
