“It has been a great year for cinema… therefore it has been a great year for animation, because animation is cinema. Animation is not a genre for children, it is a medium.”
In addition, the 58-year-old filmmaker noted that he and his co-director Mark Gustafson dedicated the award to their wives, as well as their team.
The filmmaker won one of the three categories in which he was nominated. In the other two he was up for Best Original Song and Best Original Score, which went to RRR and Babylon.
Del Toro had already won a Golden Globe in 2018 for Best Director for his film The Shape of Water.
