Despite how reviled comedy is, it is precisely the genre that saves the day when we need to lift our spirits. Sometimes we just need a simple story of endearing characters that will entertain us for 20 minutes and make us laugh out loud. that is precisely ‘Ghosts’, a supernatural sitcom that you have available on Movistar+ (and other platforms that have the TNT Now on demand service).
living with ghosts
Samantha and Jay are a couple who acquire an old mansion to turn it into a B&B. One day, Sam has an accident that almost kills her and when she wakes up…she sees that his house is full of ghosts (who are not at all in agreement with turning their home into a hotel).
‘Ghosts’ is the adaptation of the British series of the same name on BBC One, which already has two seasons. This new version was commissioned by CBS and already is renewed for a second season which will start airing shortly.
It is a comedy with no other intention than to make people laugh, playing with the premise of what is already almost a subgenre: the supernatural roommate sitcom. If ‘What we do in the shadows’ draws humor and vampire references, something similar happens here with ghosts.
His main gags have to do with that dynamic Sam can see them and talk to them while the rest can’t. (which is especially fun when Jay is involved, because he always finds out half the story), the little abilities of each ghost (some can move things briefly, others can get into the body of the living… and others just smell bad) and their personalities.
That is another of its most sympathetic elements: its characters. Not only because in the end you grow fond of them, but because the story knows how to play with the characteristics of each one (the Viking, the boy scout, the hippy, the “Wolf of Wall Street”…) so that the joke comes out on its own. And, despite the fact that comic situations predominate, there is also room for tender moments that work just as well.
The distribution complies, with Rose McIver (‘iZombie’) and Utkarsh Ambudkar (‘Free Guy’) in front, and Brandon Scott-Jones (‘The Good Place’), Richie Moriarty (‘What we do in the shadows’), Sheila Carrasco (‘I think you should leave’), Roman Saragossa (‘Austin and Ally’), rebecca wisocky (‘Maids and evil’), asher grodman (‘Succession’), Danielle Pinnock (‘Young Sheldon’) and Devan Chandler Long (‘Ambulance’) like the ghosts.
Throughout 18 20-minute episodes, the series gives rise to different situations that stand in the way of running the Bed & Breakfast, while we delve into the past of the characters. It is not a revolutionary series and it could be much more crazy but meets as “happy place” And it always leaves a good taste in your mouth.
‘Ghosts’ is a simple but effective comedy. A kind proposal that does not reinvent the wheel but delivers what it promises: laughter, funny and endearing characters, good doses of supernatural humor and leaves you with a smile at the end of each chapter.
