I still remember when A year or so ago I fell in love with these five punks. The laughter was continuous while I was watching the two episodes that, if I remember correctly, could be seen at SZFest online through Filmin. Now, finally, we can enjoy the first season in its entirety of the essential ‘We Are Lady Parts‘.
In the purest British style of a season of six episodes and an approved second that who knows when it arrives, Nida Manzoor writes and directs (and took the Rose D’Or for it) a series that takes us through the life of Amina (Anjana Vasan, who we have seen in the final season of ‘Killing Eve’), a microbiology doctoral student in search of husband whose path crosses that of a fledgling punk band made up of four other Muslim girls.
The meeting will be that guitar they need. The problem doesn’t come so much because Amina is a “good girl” who suddenly finds herself dragged into the devilish world of music, which also, but because of stage fright brutal that our protagonist suffers.
With all of you, Lady Parts
Manzoor builds the hilarious comedy, one of those in which you will laugh pure and continuous due to the absurd and silly humor, dressing it with a dash of culture shock and a good splash of nonconformity and sorority. Lady Parts brings together those Muslim girls who don’t quite fit in and, as Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey) says, “is about being heard.”
The series is aware that certain perspectives are going to classify it as “such a comedy but with a novel point of view” and in a certain sense it is so. But, just as he is well aware, He’s very smart when it comes to developing characters. to make each one absolutely fascinating in her personality as well as her own personal struggles.
Of course, the creativity of the Lady Parts is brilliant. Topics like Voldemort under my scarf or I’m Gonna Kill My Sister! they are great hymns (composed of Manzoor herself and her sisters) and it’s funny how they handle that contrast between singing this and after a few minutes they’re shouting each other singing “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers.
Songs aside, the series also affects that reconciliation between belief and work, family, friendship. In expressing yourself as you are without having to renounce your faith and without necessarily having to conform to what others expect of you. And, also, not to let others speak for you.
In a year in which just weeks apart we have seen several musical series (‘Girls5Eva’, even to say a comedy) ‘We Are Lady Parts’ is a huge blow to the British comedy table. It is hilarious and one of the essential series for this 2023.
