One of the news that has generated the most debate at the national level this year is the free travel of Cercanías, Rodalies (Catalonia) and Media Distancia approved by the Government. Between September 1 and December 31, returning users will be able to use these services when we use a multi-trip ticket that we must request in advance on the Renfe website (the term is already open, by the way).
When the proposal was approved, we already detailed how free trains work in Spain and all the key points to be able to join the proposal, we must remember that single tickets are not free or that they only contemplate a round trip. Now that we have already requested our subscription, it is time to think about how we are going to make the most of it.
If we live in Madrid, a great option to take advantage of this initiative is to book a weekend or (a day trip, depending on the occasion) to a city or town that is close to the capital and has a connection thanks to the Cercanías.
Toledo

Walking at night is one of the most beautiful experiences in the world. This city, which hides a great history, is great to visit in just a couple of days. Likewise, autumn is a good time, since the heat does not press so much. Surely the Cathedral of Toledo and El Alcázar leave you speechless. From Atocha to Toledo there are about 35 minutes by train.
Aranjuez

The Royal Palace of Aranjuez is a true delight, both for lovers of history and beautiful gardens. National Heritage, the city of Aranjuez also boasts the Pond of the Chinescos or the Plaza de Parejas and the Church of San Antonio de Padua. To get to Aranjuez from Atocha we have a train that requires about 50 minutes of travel.

Alcala de Henares

The city, home of Cervantes, is a World Heritage Site (like Ávila, to give another nearby example). The Alcalá de Henares University, the Santo Tomás de Villanueva Courtyard and the Alcalá de Henares University Paraninfo stand out. Likewise, Calle Mayor and Calle Libreros have endless bars that put a cover on the drink. In this case, to get to Alcalá de Henares we will need about 40 minutes from Atocha.
Guadalajara

While the cities mentioned above are ideal for a quiet weekend, to visit Guadalajara you could have enough with one day. Visiting the Palacio del Infantado, the Alto Tajo Natural Park and the Pantheon of the Countess de la Vega del Pozo is mandatory. In a little less than an hour we can arrive from Atocha.
Talavera of the Queen

The Basilica del Prado, also known as the “Sistine Chapel of ceramics” is one of the tourist jewels of this city which we can access from the center of Madrid in about an hour and a half. If you choose this destination, do not miss the Alameda Park, the Ruiz de Luna Museum or the Church of Santa María La Mayor, La Colegial.
