Demonstrations that we are facing an imminent nuclear war between Russia and Ukraine are becoming more frequent. That is why the Finnish government is trying to prepare its citizens so that they are protected against any possible catastrophe.
After Russia’s attack on Ukraine has intensified in recent days as a result of the attack on the Crimean bridge, the Finns are aware that the risk to their population is much greater, since they share 1,340 km of border with Russia .
For this reason, as a preventive measure, the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health has asked its population under 40 to buy potassium iodide tablets, in order to protect themselves against any possible risk of nuclear radiation.
Potassium iodide is a crystalline salt with the formula KI that is used in radiation treatment, since it prevents the absorption of radioactive iodine through the thyroid, because when the human body is exposed to nuclear radiation it can develop cancer or lesions. in the thyroid gland.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that people up to the age of 40 take iodine tablets in case of a nuclear accident, and of course, pregnant women should also take the tablets to protect their babies.
Unfortunately, the pills have sold out in a few hours, so it is impossible to get them at any pharmacy in the country that is part of the European Union. The Finnish Association of Pharmacists has said that there will be, in the near future, iodine tablets throughout the territory.
In addition, the Finnish government has highlighted the importance of sheltering indoors to reduce any risk of radiation exposure. But that is not all, because they also asked the population not to consume the pills on their own, since they must wait for the civil protection authorities to issue a notice, if required.
Although the Republic of Finland has various emergency protocols, a large supply reserve and a whole network of shelters for its inhabitants in case of facing any type of disaster, the reality is that nothing can prepare them to face the horrors of a war.
