In 1987 Chris Claremont delivered another of the works that captivated the Marvel Universe when Fantastic Four and X-Men starred in a crossover that laid the foundation for the future of both teams.
Chris Claremont is the architect of several of the best stories the X-Men have, and in 1987 he was the architect of a crossover that caught the attention of the Marvel Universe when the children of the atom crossed paths with the X-Men.

Claremont essentially used Fantastic Four VS. X-Men as an additional four issues of his Uncanny X-Men series. The story took place shortly after Mutant Massacre, when Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Kitty were seriously injured by the Marauders.
Kitty’s situation was more desperate because she had become a living ghost and her body was losing cohesion. And only the unparalleled genius of Reed Richards could save her. Unfortunately, FF’s bond as a team and as a family was tested at an inopportune time, and that led the two teams into a very ugly conflict.
royal nightmares
When he was younger, Franklin’s powers were greatest when he slept. But while he slept, he saw his father as the architect of FF and the destruction of the X-Men before Reed merged with Doctor Doom.
In reality, Franklin recognized Reed’s hidden diary as the cause of his problems. Buried among the diary pages was the revelation that Reed knew the FF’s fateful space trip would turn them into superheroes. The family took that as a betrayal, especially Ben Grimm, who was sentenced to life as a monster. Worst of all, Reed couldn’t claim his innocence because he wasn’t sure if the diary was real or not.
Reed’s personal crisis robbed him of the confidence he needed for risky treatment to save Kitty. In X-Men vs. Fantastic Four #2, this angered Wolverine enough to attack Reed and spark a fight between the two teams. In a terrible accident, Storm was severely burned by Johnny Storm, and the incident created bad blood between the two teams.
Doctor Doom took the opportunity to offer the X-Men assistance with Kitty and to personally treat Storm’s burns. The FF warned the X-Men that it was a deal with the devil, but there was apparently no other choice.
alliance for the future
The third issue of the series cemented the bond between Kitty and Franklin. Kitty couldn’t voice her objections to the new X-Men alliance. Rather than let her friends and family sell her souls to Doom, Kitty chose to leave her containment chamber and let her body scatter forever. Only the desperate screams from Franklin’s dream projection convinced Kitty to climb back off the ledge.
The X-Men were grateful for Franklin’s help. So much so, that in issue #4, Psylocke gave Franklin and Kitty the opportunity to share each other’s thoughts so they could communicate openly.
By the time the Fantastic Four finished solving their problems, it was almost too late to save Kitty. The final issue gave fans the epic battle they had been promised. Once again, it was Franklin who stepped forward and reminded both teams that Kitty’s life was at stake. That helped bridge the gap between FF and X-Men and brought them closer than ever.
Kitty eventually recovered and joined Excalibur shortly after this series. Kitty and Franklin haven’t had much interaction in the intervening years, but their bond remains strong. Thanks to the sequels to Secret Wars (2015), Franklin is now much closer in age to Kitty than he was before.
