When choosing a destination for a weekend getaway or vacation, sometimes it’s not as important to know where to go as where not to go. At least, speaking in tourist terms because there is nothing written about tastes and colors for tastes, as the Spanish proverb says. So the Exceltur portal, a specialist in the tourism sector, has prepared a report in which it analyzes tourism competitiveness of 22 urban destinations in Spain and the result has left a corpse…
While Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, San Sebastian and Seville occupy the top five positions (and in that order) as the most competitive urban tourist destinations in Spain, there are also others that have been left behind and that, according to this study, we could say are the worst Spanish cities to travel to.
Thus, the penultimate place in the general ranking is occupied by Murcia and the penultimate is for Burgos. However, it is Lion the city that has been “crowned” as the least competitive urban tourist destination in all of Spain.
Exceltur believes that León has failed in the development of tourism activity in the medium and long term on issues such as the economic and social results derived from tourism (average expenditure per tourist, income, employment generated by tourism, etc.), the offer of leisure products, presence of tourism in local government structures, etc.

However, the study makes a second list, separating the cities it has analyzed by their size. Thus, León is located in the ranking of small cities. This means that, in the category of large cities (more than 500,000 inhabitants) there is another loser.
On this occasion, it is Saragossa the great city of Spain that receives tourists the worst prepared. It occupies the fourteenth position in the general ranking and its position contrasts with the fact that it is the second with the best quality of life according to a study carried out by the OCU in January of this year (only surpassed by Vigo).
According to this study, Zaragoza does not seem to stand out when it comes to the dissemination of tourism in digital media, although Exceltur does. positively values the ease of access to transport public and private. As well as the effort it puts into having more pedestrian areas. Despite all this, Zaragoza received more than a million tourists last year, which had an economic impact of more than 605 million euros.
