For many of us who enjoy —in my case, before much more than now— Marvel superhero blockbusters, the conclusion of the Infinity Saga with ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ marked the pinnacle of a Universe Marvel cinematic that has not managed to approach those levels of epic, spectacle and quality in all its forgettable Phase 4.
An unrepeatable milestone
For the Russo brothers, architects of the celebrated duo, what ‘Endgame’ achieved at the box office – let us remember that it grossed a whopping 1,200 million dollars during its first weekend – was also a milestone that will never be repeated. This is how Joe Russo explained it in an interview with Variety, hiding behind the change that the consumption habits.
“It will never happen again. That was the height of the theatrical era. When we started [nuestro estudio] AGBO, we already felt that the winds were changing”.
It should be remembered that after the premiere of the feature film in 2019, Anthony Russo expressed his almost disappointment with the financial success of the project, since kind of overshadowed the story of the movie. This is how Joe explained the words of his brother and his fellow sufferer.
“Everything always revolves around the narrative, also those movies on the market. How did it do? Did it break a record? Did it beat the last one? Those things are critical to the life of a movie. And of course , we were hoping he was going to break the international record. Because that’s a story, isn’t it?”
On the other hand, the filmmaking duo revealed that, at the time, were interested in returning to the MCU to adapt their beloved ‘Secret Wars’ sagathough joe expressed his doubts on the feasibility of production after his experience with ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’.
“[Secret Wars] it’s incredibly ambitious, it would be bigger than Infinity War and Endgame, it’s a gigantic project and those two movies were very difficult to make. So trying to imagine two other movies even bigger than those two… we’ll have to sleep on it.”
There is still a long way to go before the Multiverse Saga, in full swing and about to finish its first phase with ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, culminates with ‘Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Secret Wars’, scheduled for 2025 and 2026. In due time it will be time to put them face to face with the Russo masterpieces at Marvel Studios.
