One can only imagine what audiences in 1966 must have felt when the Doctor, after living a thousand adventures over three years, collapsed before their eyes and changed his appearance from being William Hartnell to Patrick Troughton. Regeneration is a very important part of the legacy of ‘Doctor Who’, a rite of passage that all performers have to go through at one point or another. But as you already know, That doesn’t mean they’ll never ride the TARDIS again.…
From here, spoilers for yesterday’s episode of ‘Doctor Who’, ‘The Power of the Doctor’. Then there are no complaints.
Allons-y!
After a great adventure (one of the best episodes of the Thirteen stage) in which the Doctor has faced off against a combination of Daleks, Cybermen and The Masterstarring Five and Seven, Peter Davidson and Sylvester McCoy, it was time for Jodie Whittaker, who has breathed new life into the character (although the scripts have not been up to par for most of his saga), disappeared.
In the most visually beautiful regeneration yet, the Doctor signs off with a “That’s the saddest thing… I want to know what happens next”. We all know what happens next: it’s the turn of Ncuti Gatwa (‘Sex education’), the first African-American Doctor. But in ‘Doctor Who’ nothing is what it seems, and who comes out of regeneration is none other than… David Tennant! Twelve years after his last appearance, one of the best performers of the character returns for three episodes in which he will reunite with Donna, the fireproof Catherine Tate.
Personally, they are my favorite couple in the series so I have zero complaints for this start in style of the 60th anniversary. In addition, in the trailer for what is to come we could see Neil Patrick Harris as the new great villain of the series and, finally, a very changed Gatwa wondering what the hell is going on. We’ll have to wait until next year to find out.
For its part, David Tennant has stated that he was afraid to return and not catch the style of the Doctor but everything went well right away. “‘Doctor Who’ was a fabulous time in my life, so to be a part of this series, to go on this journey and going back when I thought it was a memory has been a giftHe is not the only one who has anticipated what is to come: Russell T Davies, who is also returning, has created even more hype, if that is possible.
If you thought David Tennant’s appearance was a shock, we have plenty more surprises in store for you. The path to Ncuti’s Fifteenth Doctor is fraught with mystery, terror, robots, puppets, danger and fun. And how is it connected to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble? How, what, why? We’ll give you a year to speculate, then everything will break loose.
