Before Netflix made it fashionable to use invented monarchical countries, Disney brought us biology ‘Surprise princess’. The successful saga will join the list of upcoming sequels that the mouse company has in its hands, although it still it has not been confirmed if Anne Hathaway or Julie Andrews will be in it.
The princess diaries
‘Princess by surprise’ is the adaptation of the long-running literary saga written by Meg Cabot (also author of the novel ‘Avalon High’). The first film was released in 2001 and the sequel in 2004, both directed by the late Garry Marshall (‘Pretty Woman’).
As confirmed by Deadline, Disney has already commissioned ‘Surprise Princess 3’ with Aadrita Mukerij (‘Supergirl’) in the direction, Melissa K. Stack (‘There are no two without three’) in the script and Debra Martin Chase resumed the production of the saga.
In the two previous films we saw Anne Hathaway like Mia Thermopolis, an American teenager who discovered overnight that she was the heir to the throne of Genovia. Julie Andrews played her strict grandmother in these two installments that were a real box office hit.
Although it has been announced as a continuation of the story and not a reboot, it is still not certain that the two actresses will reprise their roles. For his part, Hathaway has confirmed his interest in returning to his character and in doing it accompanied by Andrews:
If there’s a way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think it would work. We would even go to where she was and put a chroma behind her to make it possible.
For now, we will have to wait to find out how this third part of ‘Princess by Surprise’ progresses. In Spain, the two films are available through Disney +.
