The 2022 Oscar Awards gala has already gone down in history, not for any of its nominated films but for the unfortunate moment starring Will Smith and Chris Rock in which the first slapped the second across the face. To the surprise of very few, Rock has confirmed that will not preside over the famous gala next year.
not one more
No one forgets the scene staged by Will Smith slapping Chris Rock for a joke about his wife. Much less Rock himself, who announced at his last show in Phoenix (Arizona) that he had rejected the offer to present the gala of the next Oscar Awards in 2023.
The comedian joked that going back to the Oscars it would be like asking Nicole Brown Simpson to “go back to the restaurant”in connection with the murder trial of OJ Simpson, whose ex-wife left her glasses in an Italian restaurant before she was murdered.
During the stand-up comedy show, Rock commented that he had also turned down hosting the Super Bowl and that the Oscars slap hurt him, noting that Smith played boxer Mohammed Ali in the movie ‘Ali’: “He’s bigger than me. The state of Nevada would not approve a fight between me and Will Smith.“.
At the same gala in which the event took place, Will Smith won the award for Best Leading Actor for his role in ‘The Williams Method’ and, although he apologized to the Academy in his speech, it wasn’t until months later that he apologized to Chris Rock through a video he posted.
With this decision by Rock and the decade of veto that the Academy has imposed on Smith, what is certain is that we will not see either of them at next year’s ceremony, which will be held on March 12, 2023.
