Although during the MAPPA Stage 2023 We’ve had previews of ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ and ‘Shingeki no Kyojin’, there’s also been some space left for the anime studio to shine a bit with the new projects it has in sight.
We didn’t expect it anywhere, but we already have a new series underway for the new year, and on top of the hand of the director of ‘Banana Fish’.
Preparing the winter grill
‘Bucchigiri?!‘ is an original story by Hiroko Utsumi, director of ‘Banana Fish’ and ‘SK8 the Infinity’, so she’s not part of any manga or light novel. Taku Kishimotothe screenwriter of ‘Erased’, has been in charge of developing the script and Takahiro Kagami‘Death Note’ designer, character design and animation supervision.
It is Utsumi’s second collaboration with MAPPA and not many details have been given about the synopsis yet. The first trailer looks a bit haunting and looks like it will focus on a group of teenage gang members, albeit with a hint of the supernatural. In any case, having this team and MAPPA involved, from what we can see we know that the visual part of the anime is going to be very interesting.

The studio is already closing its next releases little by little, and it has been confirmed that ‘Bucchigiri?!’ will arrive in January 2024, within the winter anime season. Right now MAPPA has several open series pending for more seasons, but it remains to be seen if they will also finally take over the return of ‘One-Punch Man’ for next year, which still hasn’t gotten wet on that front.
