“Avatar 2 is like The Sopranos.” James Cameron explains why ‘The Sense of Water’ has to be so long

james cameron is well aware that some viewers are wary of ‘Avatar 2’. He himself has acknowledged that he is afraid of the possibility that ‘The Sense of Water’ fails and has even given us permission to go pee halfway through the film if we feel the call of nature, but it has not been until now that he has explained why does it have to be so long?

    Cameron’s explanation

Let us remember that the filmmaker himself recently confessed that he threw away a first version of the film because something vital was missing, so he put everything into his efforts so that nothing was out of place. And that led, as Total Film points out, to it being much more ambitiousboth in emotional terms and in terms of the number of characters.

People say “OMG, a Disney family story?” Just what we wanted…” It’s not that kind of family story. It’s a family story like ‘The Sopranos’ is a family story.’

The goal is to tell an extremely absorbing story in emotional terms. I would say the emphasis in the new movie is more on the characters, more on the story, more on the relationships, more on the emotion. In the first film we don’t spend as much time on relationships and emotions as in the second, and it’s a longer film, because there are more characters to attend to. There is more history to serve.

On paper it is a reasonable reflection, even that comparison with ‘The Sopranos’ that a priori could sound a bit out of place, but then you have to offer something up to par. And it is that ‘Avatar’ may lead the list of highest-grossing films of all time, but that did not prevent him from receiving several accusations of plagiarism to which Cameron himself never wanted to give too much validity.

Luckily, it won’t take too long to see if ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ lives up to what the also director of ‘Titanic’ is promising us, since this long-awaited sequel will hit theaters next December 16.
