After an exciting final gala and while waiting for the impressions of the finalists in ‘La coronación’, we can now look back and assess how this second season of ‘Drag Race España’ has been, in which she has repeated so much as presenter, Supremme de Luxe, as jury, Javier Ambrossi, Javier Calvo and Ana Locking.
From here, an analysis of the season will be made with spoilers.
New Contestants
Last year we witnessed the first steps of Atresplayer Premium’s commitment to emulate the success of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ with that first season of the native version. The results were quite good so in this second round they have preserved the successes of that season 1 and raised the stakes in some aspects.
To get started, have increased the number of contestants from 10 to 12, with the consequent increase in chapters (from 9 to 11). Within the group of contestants, we have once again had varied profiles, although perhaps more contestants with sewing skills have been lacking (although in general it is an increasingly common problem in this format).
Among the contestants the age range has been higher than in the previous season (with more than the majority hovering between 30-40 years old), with the peculiarity of also having the youngest participant of all the versions of ‘Drag Race’ (Jota).
This raises the question of To what extent is it fair to make such young queens compete against others with much more experience although it must also be taken into account that, in other editions, the most veteran often do not reach the final while there are many young finalists (and even winners) in the history of the program.
big hits
Throughout the season, some of the show’s most iconic tests have been kept. In the Snatch Game, again, perhaps the general results fell a little short, although the 2-3 contestants who showed off gave memorable performances. The roasta the former contestants of season 1 was also one of the most hilarious and the makeoverwith the members of Fundación 26 de Diciembre representing previous queer generations also left a great taste in our mouths.
The mini-challenges have also had their moment, repeating some safe bets like the reading or the draguiñolesand giving us hilarious moments like ‘The great game of the goose’ (aka ‘Tartazo or kiss’) or the sumo championship.
If you have to keep something from this season, it would be the catwalks. The very high level that they have shown in looks such as ‘Almodóvar Girls’, ‘The day of the beast’ or ‘The night of a thousand Raffaellas’ is something that is already history of this contest.
Another point in favor of this edition are the guests at each gala. Especially, the drag guests such as Choriza May or Alexis Mateowho gave a lot of play with their funny and accurate comments (something that is appreciated because in ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ they don’t usually bring drag queens as guest judges).
Deserved (if predictable) winner
supreme has been reconfirmed as a worthy alternative to RuPaul. Without the need to imitate the drag diva but with a charisma to match her and a friendlier and more empathetic face when dealing with the contestants, among whom there has also been good vibes and camaraderie, without too many dramas.
The main criticism on this occasion is the same as the previous season: it was too clear from the beginning who would be the winner And, as much as they try to give her something and intrigue at the final gala, we all already knew that Sharonne was the one who deserved to win and who, indeed, won.
In summary, this second season of ‘Drag Race Spain’ has left an even better taste in the mouth than the previous one. With some bases already settled, everything has flowed naturally and they have been able to take advantage of the successes of season 1, adding new things and having the support of 12 new and talented contestants. Given the obvious, there is only one thing left to add: long live ‘Drag Race’!
