I have no proof —well, some in the form of great movies—, but I also have no doubts that Pablo Larraín is one of the greatest Latin American names within the international film scene, rubbing shoulders with titans like Alfonso Cuarón or Guillermo del Toro; and we only have to take a look at titles like ‘El club’, ‘Ema’ or ‘Spencer’ to corroborate it.
Another myth to explore
After the biographical film centered on Princess Diana of Wales and starring Kristen Stewart, and her portrayal of Jackie Kennedy in 2016’s ‘Jackie’ by Natalie Portman, the Chilean will return to the biopic in a female key with ‘Maria’in which you will explore the fascinating figure of the legendary Greek-American soprano Mary Callas.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Larrain has teamed up again with screenwriter Steven Knightwrite ‘Spencer’, to shape the script for a feature film that will star none other than Angelina Jolie. The actress, whose last big screen role was in Chloé Zhao’s ‘Eternals’, has issued a statement talking about her next role.
“I take Maria’s life and legacy very seriously. I will give everything I can to rise to the challenge. Pablo Larraín is a director I have admired for a long time. Having the opportunity to tell more of Maria’s story with him , and with a script by Steven Knight, it’s a dream.”
Larraín, for his part, has celebrated being able to combine two of your passions on the big screen with a star of the stature of Jolie.
“Having the opportunity to combine my two deepest and most personal passions, film and opera, has been a long-cherished dream. To do this with Angelina, an extremely brave and curious artist, is a fascinating opportunity. A true gift.” .
‘Maria’ does not currently have a specific release date, but filming is expected to start in the summer of 2023with a potential release ahead of the 2024 festival and awards season.
