Almost 20 years after the premiere of Hulk in theaters, director Ang Lee recognizes what went wrong in his film, but he is proud of his film of the Emerald Giant
In 2003, more than 52 weeks after the premiere of Spider-Man in the cinema, Marvel Entertainment opted for the Oscar-winning director, Ang Lee, to take the reins of an iconic character from The House of Ideas, the Hulk, in a film that passed with more pain than glory.

Ang Lee’s proposal focused on the Emerald Giant focused on a deeper story which he sought to internalize in the mind of the Hulk, which was accompanied by a cast led by Eric Bana, Jennifer Conelly, Nick Nolte and Sam Elliot.
However, Ang Lee’s idea was not well received by Hulk fans, who rejected the film at the box office, becoming a flop for Marvel and Universal.
Ang Lee’s mea culpa with the Hulk
Almost two decades after its premiere, director Ang Lee shared in an interview for The Guardian that despite the public’s response, he continues to support his version of The Hulk.
“I’m still proud of (my version of) the Hulk, but I underestimated the power of a genre and how you should deal with the general audience”.
Lee noted that while Spider-Man was swinging on the theater billboard, he was busy making his Hulk movie.
“Spider-Man came out while I was doing the Hulk. And I was here filming a psychodrama! Back then, the system was not as strict as it is today.”.
The Asian-born filmmaker mentioned that after the success of Spider-Man, Universal and Marvel gave him creative freedom to direct the film.
“After The Tiger and the Dragon (at Universal Pictures) they must have thought, ‘Maybe this guy can do anything.’ Hulk was the only time I had absolute and total freedom, which can be good or bad. Whatever I wanted, at whatever expense, was mine. It was like shopping. Anything goes!”.
Facing poor public response, Universal Pictures didn’t produce another Hulk movie until 2008, with Edward Norton headlining The Incredible Hulk. Since 2012 Mark Ruffalo has been the interpreter of the Hulk.
