One of the most important plastic artists of all time, Andy Warhol, worked on a Batman film project underground, which never saw the light of day
Even great artists cannot resist the adventures of Batman, and an example of this is Andy Warhol, the plastic artist who revolutionized art in the 20th century, and who was the first director of a fan film with the Dark Knight as protagonist.
Don’t Miss: Why Did Adam West’s Batman Series End?
Since his appearance in the pages of Detective Comics #27 (May, 1939), Andy Warhol was a great follower of the adventures of the Dark Knight, who made the leap to the big screen in 1943, thanks to the series starring Lewis Wilson.
In 1964 Andy Warhol headed a project which would cross the paths of two legends from different mythologies, horror literature with the DC Universe in the film Batman Dracula.
For this film, Andy Warhol joined actor Jack Smith, who would be in charge of playing both Batman and Dracula, whose details such as the plot or images of the footage were kept secret.
Is there a copy of Batman Dracula?
The detail with Andy Warhol’s film was that the pop artist did not worry about the issue of rights with DC Comics. Some reports indicate that the publisher asked Warhol to get rid of the footage to avoid legal problems.
When the film was in the middle of its shooting, Andy Warhol decided to abandon the production of the film, to focus on other artistic projects.
Years later, some filmed fragments of this film were exhibited in some of the exhibitions with Warhol’s works, but these were kept as a fan film.
But despite the efforts of Andy Warhol, Batman returned to film and TV in 1966 with the series starring Adam West, a project that would not be understood without the impetus of another media personality, Hugh Hefner.
In 2005 Batman and Dracula would face each other, in an animated film that can be seen on digital platforms.

Batman: Year One; a masterpiece that SMASH and DC Comics Mexico bring to you
In 1986, Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli produced this groundbreaking take on the origin of Batman: who he is and how he came to be. Sometimes careless and naive, this Dark Knight is far from the impeccable vigilante he is today.
In his first year on the job, Batman moves through a much darker Gotham City than the one he left. His solemn oath to extinguish crime from the city is only half the battle. Along with Lieutenant James Gordon, the Dark Knight must also battle a police force more corrupt than the scum of the streets.
SMASH and DC Comics Mexico bring you DC Essential Editions: Batman Year One. The masterpiece of Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, in a new exclusive SMASH edition.
