The president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorcongratulated director Guillermo del Toro on his victory in the most important night of cinema, in which he won the Oscar for Best Animated Film for Pinocchio.
In the early hours of the morning of Monday, March 13, the president gave his opinion on the filmmaker’s victory in the 95th edition of the awards granted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, where he described it as an “exceptional Mexican”.
“I want to congratulate Guillermo del Toro, Mexican film director, for the Oscar Award with the movie Pinocchio. Our congratulations to this Mexican. Exceptional filmmaker! Guillermo del Toro is a pride for Mexico”, said the first president.
The AMLO congratulations were just the beginning of many others by other political factors in Mexico through their different social networks.
“Many congratulations Guillermo del Toro for being three times the recipient of an Oscar in your career. The Mexicans we are very happy to see you succeed with Pinocchio,” he wrote. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardohead of government of Mexico City.
“Many congratulations, Ángel Meléndez, Antonio Pedroche and Oscar Hernández, you represent Puebla and Mexico with dignity. Obtaining the Oscar for best animated film is a sample of his great work together with the teacher Guillermo del Toro ”, was the message on Twitter from the president of the Senate, Alejandro Armenta.
Guillermo del Toro’s speech to Latinos
Shortly after obtaining his golden statuette, the Mexican director spoke with journalists in the press room, and gave important advice to colleagues who are following in his footsteps in the cinema.
“Any time you do a job as a Latino or a minority you are not alone. And the first duty of the representation is to do it very well, since it is not only for you. You do it for the people who come after you and look for opportunities. And if you don’t, you close the door. Things have changed since I arrived in the nineties,” she expressed.
In the same meeting with the media, Guillermo del Toro recalled a talk he had with his friend William Navarrowinner of the Oscar for Best Photography for “El Laberinto del Fauno”, in which he was questioned in a “joking” tone why he needed a Mexican filmmaker, if he already had a gardener.
“There was a lot of open racism. A glass ceiling. And you have to push it all the time. It does not end with a generation. It doesn’t end with one person. Together [hay que] push the limits and create opportunities”, confessed the Mexican filmmaker.
