All the fun and controversial references from the Barbie movie to your parents’ childhood
The Barbie movie will be released next July, and these are some of the references to the past that the famous doll has been making in its trailers.
2001: A Space Odyssey
Staley Kubrick’s film is a science fiction classic that was released in 1968. Check out the scene that was replicated in Barbie.
matrix
The film starring Keanu Reeves was released in 1999, and Barbie refers to this film when questioned about whether to go to the real world or continue living in his dream world, this is a reference to the choice that Morpheus proposes to Neo in The Matrix .
Barbie’s house
Surely your mom has told you how she played with Barbie’s house or how much she wanted to have one. Without a doubt, in the movie, Barbie shows off her beautiful and impressive house.
bratz dolls
When Barbie is in the real world, she meets a group of teenagers, they could be a reference to the Bratz, direct competition from Mattel.
The Bratz are owned by MGA Entertainment, so they could not appear “officially” on the tape, however, they could be represented with a nostalgic wink.
Barbie and Ken
All the girls, or almost all, preferred Barbie and very few asked for a Ken, and this was made clear by the film’s director, Greta Werwig.
“She is all. He’s just Ken” or “Barbie has a great day every day, Ken only has a great day if Barbie watches him”.
Actor Ryan Gosling has been severely criticized for his role as Ken in the new Barbie movie, as they say he is already too old.
