Leonardo DiCaprio, was known for his bad luck when it came to competing for the Oscar for best actor, but he finally did it with ‘The Revenant’ (The Revenant, 2015) after making many sacrifices for the performance that could finally break his curse. The actor insisted in such a way that he did almost everything to give his character realism.
A demanding role
DiCaprio played a 19th century frontiersman who, after suffering a violent bear attack, embarks on a journey across a frozen desert to exact revenge on the trapper, played by Tom Hardy, who left him for dead. Y many of the hardships he goes through on screen were also replicated behind the scenes.
The actor told Yahoo that many of his experiences were very hard, and real, how to eat raw meat:
“I can name 30 or 40 sequences that were some of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do in my career. Whether it’s going in and out of frozen rivers, or sleeping inside animal carcasses, or what I ate on set. I was enduring freezing cold and possible hypothermia constantly. what did i eat I certainly don’t eat raw bison liver on a regular basis. When you see the film, you will see my reaction, because Alejandro left it in the final cut. He says it all. It was an instinctive reaction.”
For those who think that it was a bargaining chip for an Oscar, in his day, despite his many sacrifices for the role, DiCaprio assured that he did not regret his decision, even without knowing that he was going to win it.
“The truth is that I knew what I was getting myself into. This was a movie that had been around for quite some time, but no one was crazy enough to really take it on, simply because of the logistics of where we needed to shoot and the amount of work and rehearsals we would have to do to achieve Alejandro’s vision and the cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki”.
