We say “expelled” in quotes, because she simply couldn’t take the job on Captain Marvel and was politely asked to leave.
During the press tour of Jurassic World: Dominionthe actress DeWanda wise talked with Gizmodo about the moment when he was about to play Mary Rambeau in Captain Marvel.
DeWanda Wise made it clear that she did not want to abandon the project of Captain Marvel voluntarily. In fact, it was all a matter of agenda. He simply couldn’t break the contract she had signed with Netflix Y Spike Lee for the second season of She’s Gotta Have It. He admitted that it was “very disappointing” to have to give up that role. A very difficult situation in labor terms that he had to deal with as professionally as possible.
“I did not choose to leave Captain Marvel,” DeWanda Wise clarified. “She would never have made that decision on my own. That sounds ridiculous. You know? One signs a contract for a television program and that series is in the front line of combat. That is a responsibility. Then there’s the audience, of course. On the other hand, they would have sued me and I didn’t want them to report me. I didn’t want Spike Lee and Netflix to end up taking me to court. So, you know… It was very disappointing and also very difficult to accept reality in that context.”
“Things happen when they have to happen,” said the actress.
Be that as it may, the “expulsion” of Captain Marvel also prepared her to be part of Jurassic World: Dominion. In the third part of the trilogy, DeWanda Wise plays a fighter pilot, a character very similar to Maria Rambeau. She herself has admitted that she would not have accepted the role in Jurassic World: Dominion if she had played Maria Rambeau earlier.
“I don’t repeat performances,” said DeWanda Wise. “If I had ended up in Captain Marvel, if I had already played a pilot and then Colin had called me to do Jurassic World: Dominion, I would have turned down the role. I don’t believe in capitalism, you know? They should have found someone else. In the end, I believe that everything happens at the time it should happen. I am very grateful to be able to be here now, things as they are.
