Sometimes it happens: getting into a car is like traveling back in time. We have seen it in countless movies and we have experienced it in our own flesh. In some cases, the journey ends in places typical of a fairy tale (such as the Smurf village of Malaga). On other occasions, when getting out of the car, the ghosts of the past surface.
Belchite Viejo is the town that is located south of Zaragoza, about 50 minutes by car from the city. The name may not seem like anything special to you, but this abandoned town hides part of the history of our country.
Destroyed in one of the most savage battles of the Civil War, this point of our geography is the living memory of the barbarities that should never happen again.
Belchite fell into disgrace in the summer of 1937 (exactly between August 24 and September 6, as we read on the town’s website). At that time, the republicans began an offensive in order to take Zaragoza and Belchite became a battlefield for two weeks.
Regarding the places of interest in this town that can be visited, the highlights the Arco de la Villa, the Convents of San Agustín and San Rafael and the Church of San Martín de Tours. It is a hard visit, but it is worth it if you are spending a few days in Zaragoza (an oasis for gastronomy lovers) or even if you live in the city and have never considered approaching this historic town.
Currently, it can be visited with a guided tour offered by the town hall. There are two modes: day and night (only suitable for the bravest). The price of tickets is eight euros per person, children under 14 can enter for free.
