The potato omelette is a sensitive subject. Although its recipe couldn’t be simpler, it stirs passions as soon as it’s touched: whether it’s made with onion or not, whether it’s better using butter, or the culinary dramas of how they try to reproduce this dish abroad. If you still can’t get over Jamie Oliver putting chorizo in the paella, Wait till you see how this Spanish guy got served a tortilla skewer in America.
When Caro was teaching English in Mallorca, she met Valerio, a Catalan boy With whom, summarizing his story, he would end up having a long-distance relationship when he had to leave Spain and return to the United States (and even move to other countries).
However, they are currently together in the United States and Caro did not want to miss the opportunity to document on TikTok how her boyfriend discovers the idiosyncrasies of his country for the first time. So, as part of this adventure, they ended up trying Spanish food in a restaurant in Washington and you can imagine the result.
There is nothing more Spanish than a potato omelette skewer, so this dish could not be missing from the order and, although the portion they brought him did not look bad, it came with several details that you would never see in Spain.

To start, the omelette was accompanied by a good spoonful of alioli. This is something that, while not common, is still a passable license. However, a Spanish I would never sprinkle the surface with hot paprika or put two decorative jalapenos on it.
In addition to how strange it is visually, when Valerio proceeds to try the tortilla, both ingredients give the bite a spicy and vinegary aftertaste and, as he himself says: “tortilla de patatas is never spicy”.
Although he tries to give the dish a second chance by dipping the tortilla in a little aioli, in the absence of bread, Valerio finally says: “no, this is a crime”.
