Killer carnivorous butts, sex ghosts, modern art-loving supervillains, and killer puppets await you in Doom Patrol Season 4
When it comes to TV shows, there’s nothing like Doom Patrol. Can anyone else think of a show where a giant cockroach with a god complex makes out with a rat while standing on a gender-conscious queer street? Read that sentence as many times as necessary because that is Doom Patrol.

DC’s weirdest series has given us murderous carnivorous butts, sex ghosts, modern art-loving supervillains, and murderous puppets. And believe it or not, there’s a lot more where that came from.
“We have a fabulous musical episode this year where everyone sings and dances in an alternate universe.jokes Rita Farr actress April Bowlby. “I don’t even know how many universes we will travel to this year. There’s dimension upon dimension, and then time travel, but somehow, they come together and there’s this cohesive story about relationships and growth.“.
This season will also feature more Danny, who took the form of an ambulance when we last saw them in season three.
“You can’t have a season without Danny.Bowlby notes. “There are butts this season. More butts. more sexual ghosts”.
Of course, Doom Patrol is more than just insanity thrown all over the place. The show has a lot of heart, with a lot of character development and emotional scenes.
“The season is incredibly heartbreaking,” Bowlby promises. “It doesn’t start that way, but it evolves that way.”.
Victor’s journey without Cyborg
Victor Stone will continue his journey of self-discovery throughout the series. Last season, the hero known as Cyborg underwent a procedure that replaced most of the cybernetics on him with synthetic skin. Now Victor must figure out who he is outside of his Cyborg persona.
“He’s lost cyber and just trying to figure out what it means to be a human being and a black man in Detroit”shares Cyborg actor Joivan Wade. “We can see him connect with himself, with some of his old friends, with Detroit, and find himself inside all of that.”.
“Now he has lost what gives him his power“, keep going. “We really see that in season four: he’s not the same guy he usually is. He is also losing a bit of respect from the rest of the team. He has to use a little more of his noodle than anything else because he doesn’t have the strength to fight his way through so he has to use his brain”.
As Victor Stone struggled to adjust to life without cyber, Wade found it made it easier for him as an actor. After all, filming in Cyborg makeup and costume can be tricky.
“I can’t see through the mask, and it kind of messes up depth perception.”, he reveals. “So it’s good, especially when there’s combat. Vic is much more free in his movement than him, and he’s great because he gets to really experience life without being connected to cybernetics. Without it, he now has to find new ways of doing things. Second nature to him is to go and call Grid and he realizes that Grid is no longer here.”.
This will also lead to a change in Vic’s complicated relationship with his father, played by Phil Morris.
“We really have a chance for some healing to happen, and part of that for Vic is trying to connect with his father.Wade reveals. “At the end of the third season, that was the real charge with him confronting his father and telling him exactly how he feels. Now, having the opportunity to be given what he wants, he creates that bridge for himself and creates more common ground between the two of them. We get to explore that and see that version of the relationship this season. It’s very nice and very funny”.
Madame Rouge and Rita Farr: A challenging relationship
Another relationship that will take center stage is that of Rita Farr and Laura De Mille, also known as Madame Rouge. Last season featured a complex rivalry between the two characters, which worsened after Rouge killed Rita’s lover, Malcolm.
“I think Madame Rouge is still trying to curry favor with her, because she put her through a lot.says Rouge actress Michelle Gomez. “So, she has to earn his trust. I think it’s interesting to see Madame Rouge shift into another gear that isn’t necessarily all-powerful, but actually seeks acceptance.”.
Although the two made peace with each other last season, Bowlby says Rita won’t be so quick to forgive and forget.
“At first, she starts to punish her and then eventually they come to forgive each other.”, he jokes. “There’s a really lovely scene where they’re drunk, go through a portal and time travel to another dimension. And all is forgiven! Rita is growing up all the time, and I think in the season four arc, you’ll see that she’s becoming more loving and honorable and more of a well-rounded person than anyone on the Doom Patrol. She exceeds our highest expectations”.
This growth means Rita will try to take a more active role as team leader, which might not pan out.
“She will become the de facto leader, and because she takes the role so seriously, she ends up driving the Doom Patrol away.”, acknowledges Bowlby. “She doesn’t realize it. It’s very important to her, but she takes them away from her, and then she feels very ostracized and heartbroken. A few things happen, and she then takes the role again and she really becomes the leader she always wanted to be.”.
Laura De Mille will also learn to play nice with others.
“She’s swimming in gray right now, and gray is this season’s new black.”, reflects Gomez. “At the end of the day, we’re all here for ourselves, right? Anything altruistic is all very well, but there may be a time when you have to choose. That is where the challenge of your question for goodness arises.”.
“We travel to the future and desperately want to change the future, because it is not what we thought it would be.reveals Bowlby. “As you can imagine, we also try to go back in time and fix our mistakes, and what ends up happening is that we make it worse. Because that’s what we do! that’s the show”.
In season four, the team unexpectedly travels to the future to find an unpleasant surprise. Faced with their imminent demise, the Doom Patrol must decide once and for all what is more important: their own happiness or the fate of the world?
Returning to Doom Patrol season 4 are Brendan Fraser (Robot Man), Diane Guerrero (Crazy Jane), April Bowlby (Elasti-Woman), Joivan Wade (Cyborg) and Michelle Gomez (Madame Rogue).
The first episodes of Doom Patrol season 4 are broadcast on Fridays on the HBO channel and all its seasons are on the HBO Max platform.
