The action cinema Hollywood continues to give us great joy from time to time, but it is true that the brutal dominance of the superhero figure has led to more and more space. One of the most recent cases that I remember is that of ‘The Equalizer 2’, a sequel superior to the already estimable first installment and that from today you have available on Amazon Prime Video.
‘The Equalizer 2’ brings back Denzel Washington like Robert McCall, who here will have to investigate the death of one of his allys and at the same time help a troubled teenager in his neighborhood. From the outset it is a film that opts for a different approach from its predecessor, something that is appreciated, but it is in its final stretch when it reaches a totally unexpected level of brilliance.
That last act of ‘The Equalizer 2’ alone is worth more than 90% of action movies of Hollywood so far in the 21st century. Both the setting and the stretch of staging, the control of the spaces, the forcefulness of the action and the climate of tension generated by Antoine Fuqua immerse you fully in what is happening on the screen.
For his part, Washington once again handles himself with great ease in a character who has become so appreciated that we will soon see him again in ‘The Equalizer 3’. Here he is also very well accompanied by part of the rest of the cast, especially a Peter Pascalcurrently very fashionable thanks to ‘The Last of Us’, that he manages to express a character that on paper was not that big of a deal and that ranks as one of his best works on the big screen.
Beyond that, ‘The Equalizer 2’ is a very effective pastimeor -the actor himself told us at the time that “I go to the movies to be entertained, not to be educated“- who knows that the action is very important, but also to give the story some emotion so that the public is more involved with their characters.
