There are not a few films that go unnoticed in theaters. Some later find a second life and others quickly fall into oblivion. Let’s hope that what happens now with ’70 Binladens’ is the first thing, since this great thriller directed by Koldo Serra It has just arrived at the Amazon Prime Video catalog.
Why is it worth rescuing?
Premiered in 2019 after passing through the Sitges Festival the previous year, ’70 Binladens’ barely brought just over 29,000 spectators to Spanish theaters, which resulted in a poor collection of just over 160,000 euros. Luckily, it did get to be released on blu-ray, a “luxury” that not a few Spanish films are left without achieving.
’70 Binladens’ tells the story of the bank robbery that gets really complicated. This leads to it having that vibrant touch typical of thrillers, but Serra himself stressed at the time that here he did not want to limit himself to offering something common within that genre and that he chose to include a touch of costumbrista humor that helps to give a most distinctive touch to the film.
With a careful planning work regarding staging -especially remarkable everything related to the beginning of the robbery- and a very well chosen cast -they shine especially Emma Suarez and Nathalie Poza . In this way, the emotion comes from both the situation and the characters, thus achieving something much more complicated than it seems, since tension and naturalness rarely go hand in hand.
It’s a shame all of this didn’t connect with the public at the time, but now all Prime Video subscribers will have the opportunity to enjoy it at no additional cost. For my part, I am left wondering if the fact of ending up on this platform may have had something to do with the fact that Serra is also the director of ‘Reina Roja’, the long-awaited television adaptation of the novel by John Gomez Jurado which is shaping up to be one of Amazon’s next bombshells.
