After debuting at the Cannes Film Festival, the next hit Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese will hit theaters later this year, but it seems the acclaimed director already has his sights set on his next project.
The 80-year-old filmmaker is in Italy on a tour of the cities of Rome and Bologna. As reported Variety, On May 27, before attending the conference “The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination,” the American filmmaker, in the company of his wife, Helen Morris, met with Pope Francis in a “brief private audience” at the Vatican. .
Later, during the conference, Scorsese announced that he is about to start filming a film inspired by Jesus Christ. In statements taken up by Variety, the filmmaker said the following:
I have responded to the pope’s call to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a script for a film about Jesus. And I’m about to start doing it.
Catholicism is a major theme in Scorsese’s work, considering this wouldn’t be the celebrated director’s first film about Jesus. In 1988, the filmmaker premiered The last temptation of Christ, starring Willem Dafoe.
Although the Oscar winner did not reveal more details about his new film, this would be his next project after the enthusiastic reception in Cannes of Killers of the Flower Moon.
The film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons and Brendan Fraser will hit theaters on October 6, ahead of its grand premiere on Apple TV+, scheduled for October 20. Take a look at the trailer below.
