With a great scene comes great measures, and to film one of the most important moments in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone went to extreme measures.
One of the most important scenes in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the death of Gwen Stacy, something that Peter Parker cannot prevent, and to achieve an emotional impact in this scene the protagonists Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone literally ignored each other to film this moment.
Don’t miss: Emma Stone called Andrew Garfield a “fool” for lying to her about Spider-Man 3
In the final moments of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, after Spider-Man defeats the Green Goblin, the villain manages to make Gwen Stacy fall from the tower, and despite the fact that Spidey manages to catch Gwen, the wall-crawler did not prevent Gwen. he broke his neck, dying instantly.
To pull off Peter Parker’s harrowing reaction in the scene, Andrew Garfield went to extreme measures, according to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 special effects guy Jerome Chen, speaking for a new book.
“I remember when they were shooting that scene, Andrew and Emma deliberately didn’t see each other for a week… Andrew was like, ‘I don’t want to see you! When you walk into that scene, you have to pretend you’re dead to me.’
Chen pointed out that this idea of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone worked, since the Brit managed to film the scene with inconsolable tears,
It was very quiet. The sets were almost always very quiet. Marc (Webb, director of the film) likes to work very focused. So it was very quiet, a totally closed set. And I just remember Andrew coming in and crying uncontrollably. It was hours of that. That was exhausting but powerful”.
Andrew Garfield returned seven years later to become Spider-Man within the plot of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where the wall-crawler variant still hasn’t gotten over the fact that he didn’t save Gwen Stacy.
