The arrival in theaters of ’65’ brings us a film that mixes adventure films and science fiction with the main objective that the viewer has a good time in their nearest cinema. This type of cocktail has occurred on many occasions and today’s dose of recommendations focuses on 4 great films of the 21st century that combine adventure and science fiction that you can watch streaming that weekend.
Before getting into the subject, I remind you that at Espinof we also have a review of 4 of the best adventure movies of recent years available on platforms and another with 4 of the best recent science fiction movies that you will find streaming. Now yes, Let’s move on to today’s chosen ones:
‘Interstellar’ (2014)
Address: Christopher Nolan. Distribution: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, Michael Caine
A film in which Christopher Nolan showed his most emotional side to tell us about the adventure through space and time of a father seeking refuge for humanity in general and his family in particular on another planet. An impressive show in which his director does not neglect his usual ambition, but also connects with his most human side, counting on a first-rate ally in a sensational Matthew McConaughey.
Criticism of ‘Interstellar’
‘Mars’ (‘The Martian’, 2015)
Address: Ridley Scott. Distribution: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie, Chiwetel Ejiofor
When talking about science fiction and Ridley Scott it is inevitable to remember ‘Alien, the eighth passenger’ and ‘Blade Runner’, two fundamental films of the genre, but several decades later this little marvel in which Matt Damon live an incredible adventure on the red planet trying to survive against the possibility that he ends up being rescued. A very accessible and commercial proposal but full of charm and tremendously entertaining.
‘Serenity’ (2005)
Address: Joss Whedon. Distribution: Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau, Chiwetel Ejiofor
There are many series canceled ahead of time but I remember few more painful examples than ‘Firefly’. At least, Joss Whedon had the opportunity to close it with this wonderful space opera which recovers both the western and adventure film touches of the television original to take it all a step further by fully squeezing a lower budget than usual in this type of production.
Criticism of ‘Serenity’
‘Zathura: A Space Adventure’ (‘Zathura: A Space Adventure’, 2005)
Address: Jon Favreau. Distribution: Josh Hutcherson, Jonah Bobo, Dax Shepard, Kristen Stewart, Tim Robbins
A film that could perfectly be a sequel to ‘Jumanji’, since that’s how it worked in the novel that it adapts, but Jon Favreau wanted to separate it as much as possible from the successful film starring robin williams although later argumentatively there are indisputable similarities. The result is a most enjoyable pastime that unfairly failed in theaters and is well worth giving it a try. Also, it is undoubtedly less mythical than ‘Jumanji’ but, in my opinion, it is a better movie.
